Daylight Long ago Wayne Green in his 73 Magazine wrote about bringing time into metric format, putting 100 seconds in a minute, 100 minutes into an hour, and 100 hours into a day. I thought it was absurd, but since then, I've been having ideas. Today is 090305 and we have reverted from standard to saving time. Every year I am struck by the ease at which the "so-called" atomic clocks adjust their time. Of course there is nothing atomic about them, they are just radio controlled from WWV and of course WWV has an atomic base for it's clock. In my house we have four WWV clocks and 6 (counting the car) that are not radio controlled. I do believe we could get by very comfortably on four WWV clocks, if not a couple more could be purchased making our household entirely WWV clocks. And put the "regular" clocks in the landfill.* I wonder if the average citizen might be persuaded to do the same ? Every Spring we lose an hour of sleep; I don't really appreciate it. Throughout the year the sun rises and sets at slightly different times every day. During the equinox this can vary as much as two minutes a day, but during the summer and winter solstice, the time changes by as little as a small fraction of a second. In any event, rather than enduring an hour change, we could have many changes that would be imperceptible. Just have WWV reset our clocks daily instead of twice a year. What time should we reset them to ? We could use the current system of taking the center of each time zone and make it high noon. By doing this the sun will behave much as it does now, except there will be no hour jumps twice a year. I suppose this might be the choice of the unimaginative. Others could select a more adventurous system. For example we could make the sun rise at 6AM every day, or we could enjoy long summer evenings all year round making it set at 9PM. We might decide these are both extremes and introduce algorithms such as the sun will never set before 5PM and will never rise later than 8AM. Other tantalizing possibilities abound. We could reset the clocks every minute and the sun would rise and set every day at 6AM and 6PM. We would be playing with how many seconds are in a minute with this idea. I think you can see the possibilities are legion ! Let me know what ideas this article gives you and drop me an e-mail at http://www.radions.net/spamfltr.htm I would love to hear your thoughts. * By the way, I have an idea for all the old outdated clocks. They could be set to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and we would then have a way to schedule long distance calls to any point on the globe. I don't want to get too far into this, but it could be quite an improvement over the local times we use now. TR, WB6TMY
